MG S5 EV Set to Launch in Nepal: Expected Price and Release Date

Kathmandu, Nepal – The highly anticipated MG S5 EV is making its way to Nepal, with an official launch expected in February 2025. Paramount Motors, the authorized distributor of MG vehicles in Nepal, has confirmed the upcoming arrival of this electric SUV.

A Surprise Entry into the EV Market

MG introduced the S5 EV in October 2024, surprising the global EV industry. The automaker managed to keep the model hidden from public view until its grand debut. Interestingly, the vehicle was initially named “ES5 EV” before MG decided to streamline the branding to “S5 EV.”

In China, automakers typically need regulatory approvals before launching new vehicles, with approved models appearing in public records. However, MG successfully kept the S5 EV under wraps, avoiding leaks and early disclosures.

Successor to the ZS EV

The S5 EV is the latest addition to MG’s electric lineup, following the popular ZS EV. It is built using SAIC Motors’ advanced Nebula pure electric architecture, which features the world’s thinnest battery at just 110 mm. This technology helps improve space efficiency, aerodynamics, and battery heat management.

Expected Price in Nepal

Although the official price has not been announced, industry sources suggest the MG S5 EV will be priced between Rs. 50 lakh to Rs. 60 lakh in Nepal. Bookings are expected to open soon, with MG Nepal already teasing the model on social media.

The S5 EV takes inspiration from the ZS EV but has a larger body for a more imposing look. It features a closed-face front design, slim LED DRLs, and LED projector headlamps. The split grille setup allows for better cooling of the battery.

From the side, the SUV retains a similar shape to the ZS EV but appears more well-balanced. It rides on 18-inch alloy wheels, giving it a bold stance. At the rear, Y-shaped full-width LED taillights add to its premium feel, with the MG badge positioned at the center.

Inside, the cabin has a minimalist and futuristic design, featuring a 15.6-inch infotainment screen that controls most functions, reducing the need for buttons. The floating center console includes a wireless charger, cup holder, and cooled glove box, along with additional storage space.

The three-spoke steering wheel includes physical controls, and a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster provides essential driving information.

Performance and Technology

The S5 EV’s 99 kW electric motor generates 135 PS of power and 250 Nm of torque. It accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in just 7.1 seconds. The vehicle offers two battery options, both using Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) technology:

  • 49.1 kWh Battery: Provides a 340 km (WLTP) range, with a full charge taking approximately 8 hours.
  • 62.2 kWh Battery: Offers an extended 430 km (WLTP) range, requiring 10 hours for a full charge.

Competitive Positioning in Nepal’s EV Market

The MG S5 EV is set to challenge the BYD Atto 3, a strong competitor in Nepal’s EV market. Both SUVs have similar motor capacities and battery sizes, but MG’s ultra-thin battery technology could provide a practical advantage.

With the ZS EV and Atto 3 already performing well in Nepal, the arrival of the S5 EV is expected to further boost MG’s presence in the country’s growing electric vehicle sector.
